Jeff Palmer · John Abercrombie · Arthur Blythe · Victor Lewis - Ease On (1993)

Another great Abercrombie offering from 1993 for the Audioquest label in the company of Jeff Palmer, another great innovator, on Hammond B-3 organ, the great Arthur Blythe on alto sax and victor Lewis on drums, this time under the Palmer's name as all tunes but one were penned by him. But, as we all know these dates have no 'leader' per se, the music is democratic and free-flowing, all in all a great and very modern sounding contemporary jazz set pushing the jazz organ combo genre beyond the Jimmy Smith realm.

personnel:

Jeff Palmer - organ
John Abercrombie - g
Arthur Blythe - alto sax
Vixtor Lewis - d

track listing:

1. Good News
2. Ease On
3. Side View
4. Blues on the Corner (McCoy Tyner)
5. Modal Scallopini
6. Mid Move
7. Gas Mask

  2. The first musician to use the organ as a jazz solo instrument was Jimmy Smith of course. Until he came around, only Count Basie and Fats Waller had occasionally used it as a sidekick. Jeff Palmer and Dan Wall (see previous post) belong to the line of Hammond players that started with Larry Young, they took jazz organ playing to the next level. As with all innovations it's a hit and miss approach, respect worthy nonetheless.

  3. I love Abercrombie's organ trio and Blythe's "Lenox Ave Breakdown", so this was a great pairing. I love how things start out as normal sounding bop/blues and slowly but surely get pulled into more abstract territory. Nice post! Thank you for sharing.

  4. Thad, that's exactly what these guys are doing, it's post-bop with a twist, you nailed it.

  5. I used to work in a trio with Jeff Palmer for a some years. He is great and this work was definitely his glory days. Look for Island Universe and Shades of the Pine as well. He does not consider Dan wall a real Organist because Dall Wall does not use Pedals...subs with his left hand instead.. Jeff is an Organ purist... clearly not a fan of pianists who play organ.Jeff hung with Jimmy a bit, but his style sounds more of an extension of Larry Young organ style when he is being himself, not so much on this particular recording.

  7. This is on a list that I'm working on, so I haven't had a chance to listen in. Nevertheless, this is the only venue I can think of to thank the guys who are responsible for this great site. I'm thinking about the work involved - you don't need me to tell you that it doesn't go unnoticed.
