Having listened to fair amount of Hamptons recorded output I'd have to say that this session has a certain transitional feel to it..Chuck plays a lot more fast and loose than say a Leroy Vinegar, Red Mitchell or Ray Brown..Oddly enough this to my ear forces Hawes into a more conservative space..Whilst clearly aware of the post-Hancock approach Hawes seems uncertain on this recording how to accomodate it into his love of song form..Other recordings of the 60's, to my ears, show him more happily combining these elements.

Agreed. I regard this Hampton offering as transitional myself, the step before making the full switch to his next and alas, last phase.
